FAQs
-
We strongly recommend the Novice Share for anyone other than experienced herbalists, or members who have already purchased a novice share in previous seasons. We find most members are unfamiliar with medicinal herbs and/or preparation methods, in which case the Guide to the Season will be extremely helpful in guiding your efforts. It’s important to know that anyone can work with herbs- a desire to learn, and willingness to devote a little time each month to working with your share is all you need!
For either share, it may be helpful to understand that just like preparing fresh food, working with fresh herbs takes time. Plan to spend a couple of hours each month processing your herbs.
-
Herb : any plant with leaves, seeds, or flowers used for flavoring, food, medicine, or perfume.
Throughout the season we strive to provide you with herbs that are both familiar and new to you. As an example, in 2024 members received: Pine needles, Usnea, Lion’s Mane, Stinging Nettle, Comfrey, Oat straw & milky tops, California Poppy, Dandelion greens, Plantain, Basil, Yarrow, Spearmint, Lemon Balm, Anise Hyssop, Tulsi (Temperate + Rama), Celery, Calendula, Marshmallow leaf, Skullcap, Thyme, Sage, Shiso, Ginger, Parsley, Lemongrass, and Eucalyptus.
-
You’ll receive 8 oz of each herb by weight. In some cases, like extremely lightweight or high-value herbs, we will provide you with the 8 oz equivalent in either volume or value.
8 oz provides plenty of plant material to create one larger or multiple small preparations per herb. By the end of the season your cabinets will be well stocked with creations!

Many of the medicinal herbs we grow are only available to wholesale bulk customers, and our herb club members. At the market, we primarily offer culinary herbs in quantities that are much smaller than what members receive. Herb club shares also include the individual packaging and labeling of each herb in your share.
-
Yes, in every way other than being certified so! You can learn more about our growing practices here.
-
Your herbs will be individually packaged for ease of pick-up and transportation home. We strive to use eco-friendly, compostable and recyclable packaging options wherever possible. During pick-up, you’ll receive a bag with your herb bundles as well as the herb profile cards for each herb in that share.
Whenever possible, try to process your herbs on the same day as pick-up- we recommend setting aside 1-2 hours. We think you’ll come to look forward to this set aside time to work with your plants each month!
-
Hey, life happens- if you won’t be able to make a pick-up day, please let us know as early as possible, preferably at least a week in advance. We will do our best to provide you with an alternate pick-up option as our schedule allows, pick-up will be from our farm in Hillsborough. You also have the option to “hold” your share, meaning we’ll double your share the following month.
Elysian Fields CSA Members: If you need to miss a pick-up day, we will double the amount of herbs in your share for the next delivery.
-
Yes, our aim is to make Herb Club accessible for all who wish to join. If paying for the full season doesn’t work for you, please email us at heyroseproduce@gmail.com and we will set up a payment plan that does.
For those that are able, paying for the full season in advance helps us cover the upfront costs for the season such as our seeds, compost, and herb club materials.
-
There is always risk when working with living things, whether it be a rogue storm or unexpected pest. In the rare case we experience a crop failure, we will ensure it is made up before the end of the season- that could look like doubling up on a future herb, or a replacement product of equal value from the farm. Long story short, if it happens, we will make it up to you!
-
Can’t make a pick-up date? No problem, let us know ahead of time and we’ll double your share the following month!
